Learn how to make a mandala made out of some old cds, puffy paint, and jewels to hang on your wall or dangle from the ceiling.

Do you have a lot of old cds and have no idea what to do with them? Instead of throwing them out, you can make them into a creative mandala for your home or office. A mandala is often used in meditation in Buddhist and Hindu cultures as well as psychotherapy. Some people love them simply for their geometrical beauty.

Supplies

1. 9 cds, any kind. 18 if you are going to do a two sided mandala to spin from the ceiling.

2. Puffy paint, or fabric paint, any color. Make sure the paint comes out of a small tip for precision.

3. Jewels or other beads to decorate each cd

4. Hot glue gun

5. Sturdy poster board

6. Piece of twine or string, 1 inch or fishline (depending on how you plan to hang it)

Let's Get Started

  1. Put one cd in the exact center of the poster board and glue it down.
  2. With the 8 remaining cds, overlap each around the outside of the center cd, making sure each of them touch the edge of the center cd. Glue each cd when proper placement is satisfactory. Make sure you are putting them shiny side up! Also ensure you are making a perfect circle.
  3. Embellish the cds with the design of your choice with puffy paint and the jewels. Glue the jewels down and let it dry. If you are stuck on design ideas, you can google mandalas to get some ideas. Try to make the design consistent on all the cds. The center cd should be designed a little differently than the rest.
  4. Trim the poster board around the cds. Glue the piece of string on the back in a loop to hang on the wall. Make sure to measure the width so that the string is in the exact center. If you want it to spin off the ceiling, decorate the other side of the poster board using the same as steps 1 - 3. Then use fish line to hang the mandala from the ceiling.
  5. You're done! It's easy and a great way to recycle! Remember, you can use any type of cd you may have; they all look the same when they are turned over. So these can range from video games, dvd movies, music cds, computer games or anything else that comes on a cd! The total price of this project was $6 for the paint and jewels I did not already have.
